Prakrti Environmental Design Consultancy is a land planning and landscape architecture firm, started in 1997, by Ar.Rajesh George, one of the present principals. In 1998, Rajesh George was joined by Divya Rajesh. Together their fresh approach to landscape design won them projects as well as critical acclaim.

Their approach to landscape design was radically different, even pioneering. Prakriti believes the site structure should evolve from a deep understanding of the physical site, the
Functional Approach
We believe landscape design should have a greater purpose than mere aesthetics. The starting point for any design is the functional program, which we strive to integrate into the setting that we create for it. The final product should always be a harmonious blending of functional elements into the natural environment.

Design based on context
Every design that we conceptualize evolves from its context. All contextual and circumstantial parameters are considered in the design synthesis. The created environment that results always reflects its setting and the criteria that directed its definition.

Landscapes that function
Over and above meeting the human needs deriving from the client’s program, landscapes have also to function as the medium in which the man-made environment can exist. Just as the natural environment is the physical expression of the many ecological processes that sustain it, so also, the man-made landscape should be the result of a stable equilibrium of the many processes that occur within it.

Creating an artificial environment in a natural setting destabilizes many of the processes existing at equilibrium; runoff increases, ambient temperature rises, wind-flow patterns change, organic and inorganic wastes are generated, and host of other energy and material flows are disrupted. The designed environment is the medium that should restore to equilibrium these unbalanced forces, and mesh the man-made environment into the web of natural processes that it exists in. In other words, our designed landscapes are based on process rather than product; they are designed to be active rather than passive.

Understanding of local culture
The firm’s designers bring their understanding of the local culture, of the people’s customs and traditions, to all of their projects. This enables us to create landscapes that are designed specifically for their users, keeping their social and cultural needs in mind.

Studies of local ecology
The firm’s principals have done in-depth studies on local eco-systems and plant communities as part of their Postgraduate program. They understand ecology and are familiar with the different eco-types existing in the state. Both have done research on ecological restoration and understand successional processes, and how they would proceed in Kerala. They have extensive knowledge of local flora, especially trees, both native and exotic. This knowledge is invaluable in all landscape projects, especially so in eco-tourism projects.
